Understanding the Safety Standards for Silicone Bibs

There are two primary safety standards for silicone products that will be in contact with food, including silicone baby bibs.  In the US, you’ll most often see the standard of FDA food grade.  You will also see products listed as LFGB food grade. LFGB (German Food and Commodities Act, vis Lebensmittel-, Bedarfsgeganstande-und Futtermittelgessetzbuch) is the standard more common to items available in Europe. Silly Goose Baby Bibs meets both of these safety standards.

Is there a difference?  Yes, there is a difference, but that difference is mostly in the testing methods utilized for each standard.   Silicone products that pass either of these standards are safe for use in items that will have contact with food, including baby bibs like Silly Goose Bibs.  The main difference between the two standards is that the LFGB is a more comprehensive and strict standard.  At Silly Goose Bibs, we choose to produce our baby bibs from silicone that met the LFGB and FDA standards to ensure that we were using the safest materials in an item that would be close to your baby and part of their meal time experience.

Many of the natural properties of silicone make it an ideal material for baby feeding bibs.  It is water proof and non-stick so food can easily be wiped off the surface of a Silly Goose silicone bib.  You can also put any of the Silly Goose baby bibs directly in the dishwasher for cleaning and sanitizing.  Silicone can withstand temperatures from below zero to over 400 degrees Fahrenheit, so there is no concern that the drying cycle of your dishwasher will damage a Silly Goose silicone baby bib.  Silicone is stain and bacteria resistant and it won’t retain odors or colors after use. We tested Silly Goose silicone bibs with several common baby foods that leave hard to remove stains including beets, sweet potatoes, blue berries, carrots and foods with tomatoes.  In all of our tests, we found that with one round in the top rack of the dishwasher most stains were gone and for any stubborn spots, a second time through the wash cycle finished the task.

The cleanability is one of the primary reasons Silly Goose Bibs are made from silicone.  And our silicone meets the highest standards in the world including FDA (US standard) and LFGB (German/EU standard), so you can feel comfortable using any of the adorably cute Silly Goose Bibs™.
